A Winter's Night
There is something to be said for the solitude and solace that can be found on a cold winter's night. This turbulent, emotional year has me appreciating this time outside more than any other.
While working from home, I have noticed that the day is filled with noise. It is constant, and there seems to be no reprieve. The never ending to-do list that merges both work and home is on repeat in my head. Google Meet conversations on three separate devices can be heard from our childrens' closed doors throughout the day. While my personal office noise in the kitchen competes with the multitude of Zoom meetings my husband engages with in our actual home office.
I am grateful for the noise. I am. It would be selfish and unappreciative to not recognize how fortunate we are to be able to continue our jobs safely and virtually from the comfort of our home. I am so thankful for our children's amazing educators who keep them engaged in the learning, while also trying to juggle work and their own families simultaneously.
However, last night I bundled up and went out for a walk just to clear my head. I am normally not a fan of face numbing cold, but I just needed to get outside and reconnect with nature. The first thing I noticed on my walk was the silence. I live in a small town, and it is generally quiet at night, but with the absence of traffic noise and bird song, it was just so silent and still. As I began to walk on this crisp, clear night, I could actually feel some of the tension I had been carrying be released.
For the twinkling stars overhead, to the crystallized snow beneath my feet, I am so incredibly grateful. We are living through a time that will become a monumental part of our history. I am finding it imperative to seek out those smaller scale, perhaps seemingly insignificant moments to display gratitude. Seeking the calm and stillness on this winter's night, allowed me to be thankful for all the blessings in my life, whether they be noisy or silent, and for that, I am grateful.
